The First Spark: CAD

The CAD team is responsible for turning design ideas into something relatively tangible. We work closely with the other subteams to ensure our robot design accounts for control systems and ease of machining and assembly. CAD members play an important role throughout the entire design process, from brainstorming and prototyping to refining designs and preparing parts for manufacturing.

What We Do

Designing

During class, we spend our time researching FRC robot designs and designing on Onshape. This includes creating FRC subsystems, 3D printed parts, and other miscellaneous projects.

Digital to Physical

Members get the opportunity to work on real components of the robot. You will see your designs go from a digital Onshape model directly to a physical part on the finished robot.

Subteam Integration

We don’t design in a bubble. We work closely with other subteams to ensure our robot design properly accounts for control systems, wiring, and ease of machining and assembly.

Review & Refine

We rigorously review and test our digital designs. This crucial step helps us identify potential problems and fix them before they become costly issues during physical assembly or at competitions.

Joining The Subteam

No CAD Experience? No Problem

You do not need any CAD or robotics experience to join the CAD team. Before the build season, and even before the off season, we give new members all the resources they need to succeed. You will be paired with experienced students who will help you navigate your first software tools and design challenges. Together, we ensure that no one is left behind as we build our robot.

Checklist

  • Learn the basics of Onshape & mechanical design.

  • Understand how our team approaches robot design.
  • Take on projects and collaborate to develop complete mechanisms.

In CAD, you only get as much as you put in. All you need to succeed in CAD is a strong desire to learn and a good work ethic.
