THE NERVOUS SYSTEM OF THE ROBOT: CONTROL SYSTEM

Welcome to control systems! We do work beyond just the ‘electrical’ part of the robot: we manage the electronics, keep track of updates, and work in conjunction with both the software and hardware sides of the team. Without control systems, the robot wouldn’t even move at all!

What We Do

Wiring & Layout

Every motor, sensor, and controller needs power and a way to talk. We plan where the power distribution board, main controller, radio, and motor controllers go, run wires cleanly, crimp connectors, and ensure a solid CAN bus from end to end.

Firmware & Updates

We keep track of updates. Motor controllers, radios, the driver station, and main controllers (like the new SystemCore) run firmware that must stay current and compatible. We ensure everything is updated and configured before every event.

Software Integration

The programmers write the code, but we make sure it has something to control. We assign CAN IDs, set up sensors like encoders and gyros, and help test and debug when something isn’t behaving right.

Hardware Integration

When Mechanical designs a new mechanism, we figure out how to power it, where components mount, and how wires route through moving parts without getting pinched or ripped out.

The Glue of the Robot

 Bridging Code and Hardware

When a motor spins the wrong way or a sensor gives weird readings, figuring out whether it’s a code problem or a wiring problem is where control systems really shine. A messy electrical board is a problem waiting to happen in a match, so our meticulous layout prevents disasters. Good communication with other subteams saves a ton of headaches later.

We Hold the Robot Together

Control systems is the shell the code lies in, but it’s also what moves the mechanical parts of the robot.

  • Software is the brain.
  • Mechanical is the muscles and bones.
  • We are everything that connects them.

In short, we are what holds the robot together!
